Elena Schmitt is a social media strategist and organizer from Michigan with a decade of experience in nonprofits, political campaigns, and advocacy. She began organizing in high school, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights after an auto shop refused service to gay people. She majored in Political Science and Digital Studies at the University of Michigan. There, she canvassed for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters and served as Campaign Manager and Director of Media Relations for State Representative campaigns.
After graduating, she consulted for social justice organizations, notably creating a pilot program for the Michigan Democratic Party to combat disinformation and recruiting local candidates for Run For Something. As Digital Organizer for Progress Michigan, she co-facilitated The Megaphone Project, focusing on strengthening community trust to fight algorithmic disinformation. Elena uses a modern social media approach that blends bold ideas with technical best practices. In her free time, she enjoys her dog, talking with friends, or watching the WNBA.
